Rīgas satiksme has announced a market study for a new public transport payment system

The new system is planned to be an open system, allowing passengers to use various payment methods – bank cards, mobile devices, QR codes, and other solutions. The new system is expected to allow payments without the need to purchase a ticket in advance – it will track trips and apply the most favourable fee for the passenger. At the same time, the system will enable more flexible tariff setting and faster implementation of new solutions.

The existing electronic payment system is outdated and cannot be aligned with modern payment options, including the use of bank cards on public transport. Furthermore, the company currently operates several unrelated ticketing systems that are technologically outdated and have limited development potential.

It is important to note that, when preparing market research and procurement documentation, integration with existing e-tickets will be included as one of the requirements, allowing for the continued use of existing e-tickets for trip registration. This is particularly important for older people and passengers with disabilities – if they do not wish to change their habits, no additional steps will be required on their part.

During the market research process, Rīgas satiksme will reach out to a wide range of potential system developers. The aim is to obtain accurate information about the indicative costs and possible delivery schedule in order to prepare high-quality procurement documentation.

Market research documentation is available here.
